Description of EVERNOTE
Evernote is a free app that can be used on multiple devices, including smart phones. I have it as app on my iphone and use it as a tool on my laptop, tablet, and desk top computer at school. Evernote allows users to maintain and organize electronic notebooks that can be synced across all of the devices that one uses. These notebooks can be shared with others. Evernote allows users to create, capture, modify, and store digital artifacts. “Evernote allows users to combine mobile computing and Web 2.0 applications to support knowledge building in and out of school” (www.evernote.com).
Using Evernote, one can take notes, capture images, include attachments (like PDFs), and record audio. Evernote has a search feature, making the notes completely searchable. Notes can be sorted in the following ways: by date updated, by date created, by title, by notebook, by city, or by country. With a simple click, notes can be posted to Twitter, Facebook, emailed (including to your Evernote email address), or printed. In addition, you can star notes to denote them as Favorites, which allows for offline access. Furthermore, with Web Clipper, users can save web pages with a single click.
Evernote not only offers the basic services noted above, but also offers the following premium services: Skitch, Penultimate, Evernote Hello, Evernote Food, Evernote Clearly, and Evernote Peek. In addition, Evernote offers packages for individuals, businesses and schools. For schools, Evernote offers a package which bundles together all features, services and benefits at a discounted rate. English departments at several schools in the WSFCS are piloting Evernote this year with hopes of using it for electronic student portfolios beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

Benefits of EVERNOTE
  • Free app / tool -- There is no cost for the basic services.

  • Easy to use -- Simple online instructions guide you through the process of creating an account and using the features.

  • Can be used on computers, phones, tablets, and the Web -- All of the noted devices can be used to access and work on your notes. Because your notes are automatically synced and saved, you can work from a variety of locales.

  • Allows users to compile and sort a variety of information -- The varied information makes it a true digital notebook, allowing you to include text, attachments, audio (recorded directly from Evernote), and images (which can be captured with device or uploaded).

  • Contains a search feature -- This allows users to search all of their notes by using a keyword or tag.

Constraints of EVERNOTE
  • Fee for upgrade to premium services -- Unfortunately, the premium services noted above are not free; they are available at a cost of $5 per month or $45 for the year.

  • Email required to register for account -- Users must have an existing email account to complete registration for an Evernote account. (Some students don't have an email account.)

  • With regular account, limited to images captured with device or to images stored in device's albums

  • Available options vary depending on the device you are utilizing -- Smart phones and tablets offer more options than the Web version.
